Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
A sleep study and physician diagnosis determine if your health is at risk from the effects of sleep apnea. Once the condition is diagnosed, the next step is to determine the right treatment for your needs. Sleep apnea treatment options include:
Oral Appliance Therapy
Type of mouth guard custom made to keep the lower jaw in optimal position during sleep. Oral appliances pull the lower jaw and tongue forward, preventing soft tissues from falling into the airway. This treatment is recommended for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or who are CPAP intolerant.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Therapy
Constant supply of pressurized air delivered through a nasal mask. This treatment maintains an open airway, preventing soft tissues from collapsing and interrupting breathing during sleep. CPAP therapy is recommended for patients with more severe cases of sleep apnea.
Surgical intervention typically is reserved for extreme cases of sleep apnea, or when other treatments are ineffective. Dr. Stampe refers patients to an ENT or oral surgeon when surgical treatment for sleep apnea is necessary. Surgery may also improve the effectivity of other sleep apnea treatments.
Are You CPAP Intolerant?
Many patients respond well to CPAP therapy for sleep apnea. However, some find they are intolerant to the mask during sleep. Dr. Stampe has helped a number of CPAP intolerant patients find the relief they need for a better night’s rest. In these cases, Dr. Stampe offers sleep apnea mouth guards (oral appliances) as a CPAP alternative.
Our practice is happy to file sleep apnea claims, and help maximize your medical insurance benefits. Keep in mind, if your sleep apnea is severe, your insurance provider may require you to try CPAP therapy before other options. Please contact our knowledgeable team for more information.
